Looe Key. As in other areas of the Keys, both PADI and NAUI certifications are accepted; but make sure you bring your card with you. At last count there about five full service dive shops in the Ramrod through Big Pine area. These shops usually have two dive/snorkel trips a day, weather permitting, and some of them add a third, which is a night dive. Opportunity for rentals or purchase of dive and snorkel equipment can be found at all the dive concessions.

Although the area of the Lower Keys is the least developed area in the island chain, a dive trip to the Florida Keys would not be complete without a trip to the Looe Key Marine Sanctuary, located about fives miles off Big Pine Key. This combination of outside and patch reefs hold about 150 species of fish and fifty kinds of coral formations. The sanctuary designation of this reef means that all spear fishing, tropical fish and shell collecting, and wire fish traps are strictly forbidden.

In 1998, the 210-foot Adolphus Busch was intentionally sunk in 110 feet of water to form an artificial reef about three miles west of Looe Key. Adolphus Busch, Big Pine Key. This wreck was prepared for the advanced diver, with large through holes cut for exploration.
